How Can One Align Training Goals with Business Goals?

Every organization has a set of business goals that guide its daily activities. To enable their employees to achieve these goals, organizations invest in training and development.

Improving employee performance can help push the organization towards those goals. One can develop training programs for improving the performance of an organization's employees. However, one can end up wasting a lot of valuable time unless those training goals align with the business goals.

Begin with the Business Goals

You should always consider the business objectives and the result before you start designing a program. Training goals must be created based on the business objectives of the organization and used as a context for the design strategy. Doing so allows the training goals to contribute directly to the strategic business goals.

To showcase the program's impact, the trainees must demonstrate measurable changes. This correlation is only possible when there is an understanding of the strategic business goals. By tuning the training programs to the desired impact on business goals, it becomes easier to measure the changes.

Perform a Needs Analysis

The function of a needs analysis is to identify and understand the business impact as well as the required improvements in learners. With it, you can bring the training programs more in line with the strategic goals. To do so, you must figure out:

  • The changes that the company desires in the employees.
  • The kind of training that will enable employees to develop the skills necessary for such changes.
  • What is the outcome of the desired skills development?
  • What is the impact of those desired skills on their jobs?

Employee performance evaluations will let you know the current condition of the employees. It is necessary to understand what you can do to bring the desired changes in the employees to achieve the desired business impact. As human behavior is full of nuances, you need to gather relevant data to get a proper understanding. This activity can be made simpler through observations, assessments, surveys, and interviews.

Implement Performance Mapping

A performance map can outline the current conditions along with the ideal conditions that you wish to achieve. However, it can do more than that. It can also connect the business goals to the performance goals. It will further connect those goals to tangible employee behaviors.

With this, it becomes easier to understand the knowledge base, skills, thinking practices, and motivations necessary to achieve key performance objectives. That kind of understanding allows you to ensure that the training programs have an impact on the organization.

As you may have realized, having training and development programs is not enough unless you keep improving upon them. One should always look for ways of learning experience improvement so that it becomes easier to achieve training goals and, in turn, the business goals of the organization.

Gather feedback from learners to understand their experiences with the programs. Training programs should put the focus on the learners. So, gather data on the skills and competencies that the learners and the organization desires. Determine the skills that will have the highest impact on the stated business goals. Use that data to create a performance map for achieving success. Then, use the map to develop custom training solutions that will meet the unique needs of the organization.

Programs that begin with a strategy centered on the business goals of the organization result in higher impact and ROI for the business.

Of course, in the end, you should have the metrics necessary to determine the transformation brought about by the training programs. The ROI Methodology® can help you here. Your stakeholders will also be happier when you can provide proven data on performance improvements.
